Hungarian Grand Prix, free practice, news, results, Daniel Ricciardo return, Sergio Perez crash, times

Embattled Red Bull driver Sergio Perez has seen his nightmare run of form take another turn for the worse, slamming into the barriers in the opening five minutes of first practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Perez has endured a tough run in recent rounds, particularly struggling in qualifying where he has failed to reach Q3 for five consecutive races.

He said in Hungary: “I know I have the full support of my team and, at the end of the day, I know what I have to do and what I have to deliver. I mean, I’m second in the championship for a reason.

“I think I’ve had a great start to the season, but I had a bit of a rough patch; that’s no different to any other driver on the grid. We have all had difficult periods of times, but that’s it.”

But with his RB19 set for a series of upgrades at the Hungarian Grand Prix, his weekend got off to a disastrous start as he blasted into the barriers after running wide around a corner, receiving major damage and red-flagging the session.

He wasn’t the only red flag of the session, with Carlos Sainz slamming a barrier and beaching his car after turn three while on intermediate tyres in the rain.

Meanwhile, Daniel Ricciardo got back on track for the first time, but didn’t set a representative time as rain bucketed down and drivers holed up in their garages.

With a number of drivers finding the wall or losing control – including his AlphaTauri teammate Yuki Tsunoda – the Australian showed discretion was the better part of valour in the tricky conditions.

He completed seven laps in all with hopes for better luck with the weather in FP2 overnight.

Perez’s place at Red Bull has been under significant threat given his dismal run of form, with Daniel Ricciardo believed to be in consideration for 2024 if the Mexican driver cannot turn around his performances in the final 12 races of the season.
