Israel protests and Netanyahu’s judicial reform plans, explained

Share

A plan by Israel’s far-right government to limit the powers of the Supreme Court has plunged the country into crisis, setting off widespread social unrest and drawing extraordinary opposition from the military and senior security officials.

The proposal, by the ruling coalition of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was first made in January and included a set of bills aimed at revamping the country’s judiciary. After weeks of mass protests and a general strike that threatened to paralyze the economy, Netanyahu paused the legislation in March so negotiations could proceed.
