Alaska Airlines makes emergency landing in Oregon following window and fuselage blowout

NEW DELHI: An Alaska Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing in Oregon on Friday after a window and a section of its fuselage blew out in mid-air, as per media reports.
A passenger sent a photo to KATU-TV, showing a significant hole in the side of the aircraft near passenger seats. It remains unclear at this time whether anyone sustained injuries.
“Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 from Portland, Oregon, to Ontario, California, experienced an incident this evening soon after departure,” the company said in an emailed statement. “The aircraft landed safely back at Portland International Airport with 174 guests and 6 crew members.”
The flight departed Portland for Ontario, California, at 4:52 pm, but it returned just before 5:30 pm.
The aircraft ascended to an altitude of 16,000 feet (4,876 meters) during the flight and subsequently initiated a descent, as indicated by data on the flight tracking website FlightAware.
Photos sent by a passenger to KPTV-TV depicted a large portion of the airplane’s fuselage missing.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) did not promptly reply to an email request for information.
The Boeing 737-9 MAX completed assembly and obtained certification just two months ago, as per online FAA records.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) tweeted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that it is investigating an incident on the flight and will provide updates when available.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that the crew reported a pressurisation issue and said that it would conduct an investigation.
According to FAA data, the new MAX 9 was delivered to Alaska in late October and received certification in early November.
“While this type of occurrence is rare, our flight crew was trained and prepared to safely manage the situation,” Alaska said in a statement. “We are investigating what happened and will share more information as it becomes available.”
Boeing said in a release that it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the emergency landing.
“We are aware of the incident involving Alaska Airlines Flight 1282,” the company said. “We are working to gather more information and are in contact with our airline customer. A Boeing technical team stands ready to support the investigation.”
