Andy Reid admits Kadarius Toney mistake in controversial Kansas City Chiefs-Buffalo Bills finish, video

Kadarius Toney forgot to check.

As the Chiefs have teed off on the referees for their controversial offsides call on Toney that negated a potential go-ahead touchdown in the 20-17 loss to the Bills, head coach Andy Reid said Monday that Toney forgot to check with the referees if he indeed was offsides.

“Normally, he looks over to the sideline and just gets an OK. On that one, he just happened not to, so that would be the coaching point,” Reid said Monday.

“Just make sure you check with the guy on the side just to see if you’re aligned. He’s not lining up offsides on purpose.

“Listen, he was two inches away, an inch from being legal. You can argue both sides of it, for both teams, there are things that happen where it happens like that. I guess the league’s trying from what I heard by one of the broadcasters last night.”

The Chiefs have made it known they disagreed with the offsides call that negated Travis Kelce’s pitch to Toney that resulted in a go-ahead touchdown since offensive offsides is not often called. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was shown delivering a furious spray to officials post-match.

Plenty of still images have surfaced showcasing where Toney stood at the time of the snap, and the evidence is pretty overwhelming that he lined up offsides.

Referee Carl Cheffers said the referees would have offered advice had Toney asked, and indicated Toney was “lined up so far offsides.”

“Yes, ultimately if they looked for alignment advice certainly we are going to give it to them. But ultimately they are responsible for whatever they lineup,” Cheffers said in the pool report, according to NFL Network.

“And certainly no warning is required, especially if they are lined up so far offsides where they’re actually blocking our view of the ball, So, we would give them some sort of warning if it was anywhere close, but this particular one is beyond a warning.”

While the Chiefs certainly aren’t backing down from their take, Reid did acknowledge they can’t let it get to the point that the referees can make a game-changing ruling.

“Do we need to line up right? Yeah,” said Reid, according to The Athletic. “We can’t put it in the officials’ hands.”
