The blast is reported to have torn through the top floor of a three-storey block in the capital.

The facade of the building appears to have fallen onto the street below alongside other debris.

Details of the blast are still emerging, but at least one victim had been rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

A man whose condition was described as an “absolute emergency” was wounded in the blast.

It is not clear what the extent of the injuries the four others suffered are.

The explosion occurred at around 2.30pm on Saturday.

The cause of the incident is currently unclear.

Officials have tried to calm the public amid fears the blast was a repeat of the recent gas explosion in the Val-de-Grâce neighbourhood.

At least 33 people were injured and four were left fighting for life.

But a fire service spokesperson said: “The facts are not at all of the same magnitude as those of rue Saint-Jacques.”

One firefighter told France Bleu there was no smell of gas noted “at this stage.”
