Attack on prison housing Imran Khan foiled, 3 arrested

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s counter-terrorism department (CTD), a front for ISI, has foiled an attack on Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail housing former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chief Imran Khan and other senior leaders of his party.
In a joint operation on Wednesday night, Rawalpindi police and CTD arrested three suspected militants from Afghanistan, and seized a map of the prison as well as hand grenades, automatic weapons and bombs from them.
The three men were taken to an undisclosed location. Police said they were being investigated and a search operation was going on in and around the high-security, but overcrowded prison, which is housing inmates twice its capacity.
Last week, an inmate had killed a fellow prisoner in the same jail, and injured two others by hitting them with a brick while they were sleeping in their cell. Several senior PTI leaders and workers, including former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and ex-chief minister Pervez Elahi, are lodged in Adiala jail.
Some PTI lawmakers have alleged that the “terror attack” on jail as well as last week’s incident were orchestrated by “powerful authorities” – a reference to the military – to compel Imran to show flexibility in his stance amid worsening political polarisation in the country.
