Australia has unveiled a provisional 15-player squad for the upcoming World Cup campaign in India, with Tanveer Sangha, Aaron Hardie and Nathan Ellis missing out on selection.
Last month, Australia revealed a provisional 18-player touring party for the white-ball tour of South Africa, a list that would be trimmed by three names ahead of the World Cup.
On Wednesday morning, Cricket Australia announced that Sangha, Hardie and Ellis were the unlucky trio to miss out, with all-rounder Sean Abbott and wicketkeeper Josh Inglis headlining the 15-player squad.
However, Australia is permitted to make changes to the squad until September 28, meaning the likes of Tim David and Spencer Johnson have an opportunity to push their case for an eleventh-hour World Cup call-up in the South Africa ODIs, which get underway on Thursday evening.
Steve Smith, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are all nursing injuries, but are expected to recover before the World Cup gets underway in early October.
“Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are on track in their return to play programs. All are well placed to come back online in the coming weeks and potentially for selection in the upcoming series against India,” chair of selectors George Bailey said in a statement.
“There are eight one-day matches still to play in South Africa and India before the final squad is due to be declared. They are followed by two World Cup practice games, which offers plenty of opportunity to continue the build for the tournament.”
