Ben Hunt, Shane Flanagan, honesty session, St George Illawarra Dragons vs Dolphins, Cowboys, Round 3

Ben Hunt has revealed the Dragons players were delivered some brutal home truths in a honesty session in the wake of their record 38-0 thrashing at the hands of the Dolphins.

The hammering immediately undid the good work in their encouraging 28-4 win in Round 1 over the Titans and it appeared the Dragons had got ahead of themselves in their rebuild.

Hunt told Wide World of Sports the Dragons players were given a stern talking to by Flanagan and each other in a brutally honest review of their performance.

“There was a lot of guys I guess you could say, got called out and got a few truths they didn’t want to hear and things like that,” Hunt told WWOS.

“That’s what you need in a good footy side, you need some guys that are open and willing to call teammates out and can be honest with each other and sort things out.

“We’ve got a lot of things we need to clean up both sides of the ball.

“We made way too many errors … defensively we were too lose in the ruck and let them down the field too much.”

However, Hunt clarified that the meeting was positive and the players took the constructive criticism on the chin ahead of their Round 3 clash with the Cowboys.

“I probably wouldn’t say calling each other out but helping your teammates is probably a better way of putting it,” Hunt said.

A bullish Shane Flanagan declared the Dragons were no chance of winning the wooden spoon after their Round 1 win.

However, the magnitude of their loss to the Dolphins, who had been thrashed by the Cowboys the week prior, shows the size of the task Flanagan has ahead of him to turn the club into a consistent footy side.

However, Hunt revealed Flanagan was more disappointed than angry in the wake of the Dolphins defeat.

“He was obviously pretty cranky,” Hunt said.

“We didn’t get a massive spray or anything like that, it was more just a disappointed dad speech, we knew we were wrong and stuffed up.”
