Queensland slugger Ben McDermott has been lifted out of his team’s Sheffield Shield clash and parachuted in to the Australian ODI squad after a hamstring injury to Matt Short.
McDermott punched out a century for the Bulls against Tasmania on the weekend and has been added to the national squad ahead of Tuesday’s dead-rubber against the West Indies in Canberra,
The 29-year-old scored a career-high 146 not out for Queensland, having finished seventh on the run-scorers list during the recently completed Big Bash,
Short was unable to field in Australia’s comfortable, series-clinching win at the SCG On Saturday having made 41 with the bat.
McDermott has 25 T20Is and six ODIs to his name after making his international debut back in 2018 having most recently played in the T20s in India,
It’s an unfortunate turn for Short who is looking to establish himself in the ODI squad after being named the BBL’s player of the tournament for the second season running.
McDermott joins a team which has had four debutantes through the opening two matches of the series.
After his player-of-the match effort at the SCG on Sunday, star all-rounder Sean Abbott said it was a good move for the team;s future,
“We’ve seen four debutants already who have gone about it in different ways,” said Abbott, who scored 69 and took 3-40.
“But I think they’ve jumped on the front foot early and they look ready to keep playing.
“I think there are some long-term options that we’ve seen there already.”
