A BRITISH mum has been sentenced to death by hanging in India after she and her lover brutally murdered her husband as her horrified son looked on.

British businessman Sukhjit bled to death in his mother’s house while on a month-long holiday with his family to the the Indian capital of Delhi.

Sukhjit was drugged, hit over the head with a hammer and had his throat slit with a knife.

The sole eye-witness to the horrific crime was the couple’s nine-year-old son, who testified against his mother in court.

The court heard how Ramandeep and her accomplice Gurpreet Singh were lovers.

Government lawyer Shree Pal Verma told how Ramandeep’s son testified: “He told the court how his mother and Gurpreet killed his father in his sleep in their house.”

“During the investigation, it came to light that the woman was in a relationship with Gurpreet and they had planned to murder Sukhjit.”

Verma explained that on the night of September 1, 2016, Ramandeep mixed sedatives into food, putting all family members into a deep sleep.

She continued: “According to the police investigation, Gurpreet entered the house after Ramandeep opened the gate late in the night.

“They hit Sukhjit with a hammer on his head and slit his neck.”

The couple’s young son, who had not had the sedative-laced food that evening, woke up to the chaos and witnessed the horrific crime.

Verma said: “He woke up to noise in the room and saw his mother sitting on his father’s body and smothering him with a pillow.

“Gurpreet hit his (the child’s) father twice with a hammer on his head. As his father was still alive, Gurpreet took out a knife from his pocket. His mother took the knife from Gurpreet and slit his father’s throat.”

When asked why she committed the murder, Ramandeep alleged her husband planned to sell his property and move to England, so his “family members killed him and wrongly framed her”.

The family of Ramandeep also believe she has been “framed” and said they would “fight it all the way”.

Ramandeep’s family have maintained she and her husband had a “very loving marriage” and were “deeply in love” and had two “lovely boys”.

A family source said: “The family are utterly heartbroken and shattered by this. But their fight for justice continues. They will not give up.”

Ramandeep formerly worked as shop manager at Argos in Derby, and met Sukhjit when he was working as a driver in England.

Her lover, Gurpreet, was a native of Punjab and a childhood pal of Sukhjit’s.

Gurpreet used to regularly visit the couple’s home and reportedly got friendly with Ramandeep.

Sukhjit’s mother told reporters outside the court after the sentencing: “I feel relieved. My prayers were answered and I got what I was expecting from the court.

“I was demanding capital punishment for Ramandeep so that no mother’s child dies like this.”

Despite the ruling, Ramandeep plans to appeal the sentence, and claims her innocence.

The judge said of the murder: “It wasn’t just one man who died that day. The remaining years of an elderly widow were killed, the childhood as well as the youth of two minor children was exterminated.

“The children have lost the happiness which they had when their father was alive.”
