Cameron Munster, Face to Face, white powder scandal, 2018 grand final, Craig Bellamy, Fox League, reaction

Storm star Cameron Munster has opened up about the highlights and lowlights of his glittering NRL career in a wide-ranging interview with Fox League.

Appearing on Face-to-Face with Yvonne Sampson, Munster says there’s one on-field moment he regrets the most and would love to take back.

The Storm faced the Roosters in the 2018 grand final, losing 21-6, with Munster sin binned twice during the game.

One of those yellow cards came late in the game when Munster kicked Roosters’ Joey Manu while the centre was about to get up and play the ball.

The five-eighth would cop plenty of vitriol post-game from fans and pundits for his actions, but immediately expressed his remorse in the aftermath.

However, over five years later, it’s something he still stews over.

“If there was one moment I could have back it’d be that. I can cop the first sin bin (professional foul) because I was trying to help the team,” Munster said.

“The second one still eats me to this day. I like to get in and play hard, but to lash out in that moment.

“I didn’t touch him, but the movement and the idea in my head was a split decision but a brain fart and if I had it again.

“It still kills me, still eats me to have that moment in a big game like that.

“I’d cop a high tackle or something like that, which isn’t a fair play in the game but something that has a lot less malice.”

Munster also addressed the turbulent times he faced in 2021, when the Storm almost ripped up his contract after he and two teammates were filmed in a room with white powder.

In order to remain with the Storm, Munster had to abstain from alcohol for a year and spend a month in rehab.

“I don’t like bringing it up but after the 2021 incident, that was the most heartful conversation I ever had with Bellyache (Storm coach Craig Bellamy),” Munster said.

“I think that was probably the most disappointed in his voice that he could talk to me.

“He said ‘I want you to stay, but it’s not up to me’. And that kind of hit home because at the time my missus was pregnant and obviously my contract was up in the air with the club.

When Sampson asked Munster if there was a sense Melbourne were going to tear up his contract, he said “there definitely was”

“I had to go to them with a plan and I had to live by it. I went to rehab for four weeks.

“I needed a reality check and I needed to make a stance and show that I really wanted to stay at this club.”
