David Warner not picked up for The Hundred in the UK, video

David Warner’s life as a T20 specialist has been dealt a setback after he was snubbed in the draft for The Hundred in the UK.

Warner, who set his reserve price at £100,000 (AU$194,000), was among a host of Australian men who were overlooked for the tournament including fellow Aussie T20 squad members Josh Inglis, Matthew Wade and Tim David.

Pakistan superstar Babar Azam also went unsold, alongside national teammate Mohammad Rizwan, England’s Jason Roy, Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews, Sunil Narine of the West Indies and Afghanistan’s Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

But there will still be 21 Australians playing in the UK with a host of the World Cup winning women, including Belinda Clark medallist Ash Gardner, Beth Mooney and all-round young gun Annabel Sutherland.

Former Australian captain Meg Lanning, who was the second-leading run-scorer in the Women’s Premier League, also earned a spot as she continues to be a hot commodity after her shock international retirement.

Several Australians were also retained by their franchises with Adam Zampa and Spencer Johnson to team up at the Oval Invincibles and evergreen Ellyse Perry also locked in at the Birmingham Phoenix.

But there was no room for Warner, who is now a T20 gun for hire after his retirement from Test and ODI cricket, with the T20 World Cup in the USA and Caribbean this year set to be his international swan song.

Warner never made a century in 18 Tests in England across four Ashes tours.

The veteran opener isn’t short on T20 deals however, and will line up for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League starting this weekend, and also played in the inaugural World T20 in the UAE in January, with an expansion team of the Capitals franchise.
