Des Hasler sprays Gold Coast Titans, Phil Gould warns Des Hasler, news, scores, loss to the Dolphins, footage, highlights

NRL supremo Phil Gould has issues a warning to Titans coach Des Hasler, explaining “you only get one” coaching spray per season.

Hasler’s tenure on the Gold Coast has begun with three losses, conceding an average of 30 points per game against the Dragons, Bulldogs and Dolphins.

They also became the first club in 22 years to conceded 28 points in eight straight games after going down 30-14 to the Dolphins in Round 4.

Hasler issued his team an almighty spray in the sheds after his side were embarrassed, but Gould revealed he isn’t sure the Titans players will respond positively.

The current Bulldogs powerbroker has previously coached premiership-winning sides and the Blues to multiple Origin series wins, issuing a warning to Hasler.

“I used to say to coaches (about) half time talks, take a deep breath and understand the ramifications of what you’re about to do,” Gould said on the Six Tackles with Gus podcast.

“The one question I ask myself is what do you want to say, and what do they need to hear right now? And that might be different to what you want to say.

“What you really want to say, you can’t say. You can’t say it because it’s not going to have the effect you want.

“It’s your emotion, and once that happens, if they get a feeling that it’s about you, you are now on the way out, simple as that.

“At some point you need to ask the question what do they need to hear, not what do I want to say. All coaches make the mistake, and you learn by it.”

Hasler was hired by the Titans after Justin Holbrook was sacked midway through the 2023 season, joining after he himself was ousted by the Sea Eagles at the end of the 2022 season.

Already in his short stint on the Gold Coast, he’s had to contend with several injuries but non bigger than losing skipper Tino Fa’asuamaleaui to an ACL rupture.

While Hasler’s frustrations boiled over on Saturday, Gould explained he could be “wasting his time” by berating his players.

“You had to be really timely with that sort of outburst if it was going to have the effect you wanted. That’s why I’ve always said you only get one of those a year,” he said.

“But as you get more experienced at it you find out there is really no time for it, you don’t need it, there is another way to deliver it.

“For Des, who is extremely experienced… for him to feel the way he did there was something in that game that was specifically against instruction, or against what they had committed to they hadn’t delivered, what they had promised each other they hadn’t held true.

“Whatever it was, it really upset him, and he let them know it.”
