Kevin Walters pay rise, contract, Brisbane Broncos vs Penrith Panthers, premiership, Billy Walters

Kevin Walters looks set to go from one of the lowest paid coaches in the NRL to the $1 million a season club if the Broncos can beat the Panthers in the NRL Grand Final.

Peter Badel revealed on NRL 360 that Walters has one last box to tick in a performance based contract that could see him go from earning $550,000 annually to being one of the game’s highest paid coaches.

“The Kevolution is going to deliver big bucks for Kevin Walters,” Badel said on NRL 360.

“I can tell you exclusively tonight Kevin Walters is set for a $1 million pay day if the Broncos win the grand final on Sunday night.

“As it stands, he received a two-year extension in April. He is one of the lowest-paid coaches in the NRL right now on about $550,000.

“But the two-year extension contained a number of performance clauses related to bonuses. “They were incremental bonuses based on making the top eight, top four, grand final and the big one – the NRL premierships.

“Kevvie has satisfied three of the four KPIs and if the Broncos win the grand final on Sunday night, he will tick the final box and that will see his contract go from $550,000 to $1 million and puts him in rarefied territory with the big earners in the NRL – Trent Robinson, Wayne Bennett, Ivan Cleary and Craig Bellamy.

“Kevvie Walters, once the lowest paid and once the pauper of the NRL, if they win on Sunday night he will be a million-dollar coach.”

However, Walters will get no tougher challenge to break the Broncos’ 17-year premiership drought than facing arguably the best team of all-time and certainly the NRL era in the Panthers, who are hunting the first three-peat since the Eels in the 1980s.

One of the keys to victory will be pressuring the kicking game of both halfbacks with the Panthers under fire this week for illegal tactics to block chasers from getting to Nathan Cleary.

Walters admitted the Panthers are the masters of professionalism in the NRL and flagged the possibility of the Broncos fighting fire with fire in a bid to give Adam Reynolds more time.

“Penrith do things really well,” Walters said.

“They’re a professional side. We like to try block Adam and get him as much protection as we can as well.

“Maybe they just do it a bit better than everybody else. But we’ll just leave that in the referees’ hands.”

Another intriguing storyline is the battle between the two father-son duo’s of halfback Nathan and coach Ivan Cleary and hooker Billy and coach Kevin Walters.

While proud of Billy as a father, Kevvie prefers to distance his personal relationship with his son from their roles as coach and player for the Broncos.

“I’m really proud of Bill but when he puts that Broncos jersey on he’s Billy Walters, the contracted player at the Broncos,” Walters said.

“That relationship will remain intact and while he’s not playing footy and in a Broncos jersey he’s Billy Walters, my son. Very proud of him.

“I know Bill has had a really good month of footy, we need that football to continue on Sunday night and if he scores a couple of tries in the grand final he can come around for a roast dinner the next night, no worries whatsoever.”
