Adam Scott entered the final round of the Wyndham Championship needing a strong day to keep his hopes of qualifying for the FedEx Cup Playoffs alive. He did just that.

The Australian, who has not missed the Playoffs since its existence, made eight birdies to card a final-round 63 and is currently projected exactly at No. 70 in the FedEx Cup standings.

Scott entered the tournament ranked 81st and likely needing a top-10 finish to extend his Playoffs streak and made an impressive start, carding an opening round five-under 65.

Scott then stumbled on the second day with a one-over 71 that left him eight off the pace while a one-under par 69 third round still left the Australian with plenty of ground to make up.

Scott currently sits tied for 7th alongside fellow Australian Cam Davis with Americans Lucas Glover and Russell Henley (-20) level at the top of the leaderboard.

“I didn’t really have one, honestly,” Scott said when asked what his mindset was heading into the final round, knowing he needed a low score.

“I didn’t play well on Friday and Saturday tee to green, didn’t feel amazing, so I didn’t really have any expectations. That might have been a good thing for a good score. I wish I knew what I was doing, but I don’t.”

Now all Scott can do is wait, with four other competitors directly behind him at 11-under overall and still in play with a chance of spoiling the Australian’s Playoffs hopes.

Justin Thomas, for example, is also at risk of missing out in the Playoffs hunt but the American has since moved up near Scott after an eagle on the 15th hole.

“I mean, it’s close, actually it’s close right now,” Scott said on Monday morning.

“So I don’t want to get my hopes up, but there’s a chance. I think if the wind stays around, the greens are very, very spicy out there, so it’s not easy to nestle it up near the hole and get the ball in the hole.

“If it was a little easier out there, I’d say it has no chance, but you never know.”

Scott added it wouldn’t necessarily be the worst thing for him to miss the cut anyway, explaining it would give him a “good chance” to assess where he needs to improve his game.

“I think I’m actually getting to the point where, you know, I’ve got to put that stuff aside and, you know, not play to keep a streak of playing Playoffs going but play to win stuff, not just be there to make the numbers up,” Scott said.

“So if it does end, I think it’s a good thing. I think it gives me a good chance to have a look at what I need to do differently to be more competitive in whatever competition I’m playing in.”

This year’s playoffs will see a total of $75 million (A$115m) in prize money handed out.
