Live results, medal tally, Australia gold medals, updates, Shayna Jack, better than USA

The Australian swimming team has matched the legendary feats of the 2001 crew led by Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett, adding more medals to their brilliant haul at the world swimming championships.

Coming into the final night of the meet the Dolphins had already guaranteed they would finish on top of the medal tally, claiming 13 gold medals through seven days of action – despite USA media ordering the tally on total medals won and thus propelling its team into first.

“There are a number of ways to calculate it,” US swimming head coach Bob Bowman said. “Total number, USA. Gold medals, pick which one you like. Which one do you like?”

Cam McEvoy’s stunning 50-metre freestyle gold on Saturday night ensured this year’s Aussie team would match the famous 2001 team, who also won 13 golds in Fukuoka, the home of this year’s championships.

It is the second time since the 1956 Melbourne Olympics Australia has beaten the USA in the medal tally of a major international meet.

But the Aussies fell short of winning a historic 14th gold with Shayna Jack second to Sweden’s Sarah Sjoestroem in the 50m freestyle on Sunday night.

Meanwhile emerging Aussie superstar Sam Short claimed an unlikely medal with bronze in the 1500m freestyle, completing the set after gold in the 400m and silver in the 800m. He had qualified sixth-fastest but swum a nine-second PB (14:37.28).
