Marcus Stoinis and Ashton Agar omitted from national men’s contract list, video

Marcus Stoinis and Ashton Agar have not been offered national contracts for the 2024/25 season, with Cricket Australia unveiling a 23-player list on Thursday morning.

The West Australian duo have been regular members of Australia’s white-ball teams over the past five years, but both slipped out of the first-choice ODI starting XI ahead of the recent World Cup campaign in India.

Meanwhile, Michael Neser and Marcus Harris, who have not played Test cricket since 2022, also missed out after receiving contracts last year.

Victoria’s Matt Short, Western Australia’s Aaron Hardie, Tasmania’s Nathan Ellis and Queensland’s Xavier Bartlett are the four fresh faces on the national contract list, while veteran opener David Warner was omitted ahead of his international retirement. Ellis, Short and Hardie, who earned upgrades during the 2023/24 season, have effectively retained their spots on the contract list.

Despite enjoying a breakout year in 2023, South Australia’s Spencer Johnson also missed out, along with Queensland’s Matthew Renshaw and T20 globetrotter Tim David.

Victorian spinner Todd Murphy has retained his national contract despite an underwhelming Sheffield Shield campaign, while injury-prone quick Jhye Richardson, who has not played international cricket since 2022, was also named on the list.

“Matt, Aaron and Xavier have been extremely impressive in the early stages of their international careers,” chair of selectors George Bailey said in a statement.

“Their performances and the way they have embraced the international stage has been exciting to watch.

“The panel believes they have strong futures and are deserved of their contracts as they work towards striving to become regulars in the Australian setup.”

Uncontracted players can receive an upgrade during the 2024/25 season by accruing 12 points through selection; five points are awarded for a Test match, two for an ODI and two for a T20I.
