Punjab’s ‘de-facto CM’? Nawaz chairs Maryam’s govt meetings

Lahore: Nawaz Sharif, the supreme leader of PML-N, assumed a “de-facto” role of Punjab chief minister, a post officially held by his daughter Maryam Nawaz, and presided over three administrative meetings of the provincial govt, raising many eyebrows.
Maryam took over as the first woman CM of Pakistan‘s Punjab province last month.
Sharif, 74, assumed a “de-facto CM role” and issued directions to ministers and officials regarding several infrastructure projects in the province, including the underground train and metro bus, farmers’ plight, electric bikes for students and a Ramzan relief package.
However, Nawaz chairing the meetings raised many questions since he holds no official position in either the provincial or federal govt and is officially only a National Assembly member. Presiding over govt meetings as a member of the National Assembly is unprecedented.
