Transfer Centre, Isaiya Katoa, Dolphins, Kevin Walters, Brisbane Broncos, contracts, transfers, player movement

The Dolphins have locked up halfback Isaiya Katoa on a three-year extension, while the Broncos have extended coach Kevin Walters’ deal.

“The Dolphins have locked in a key part of their future with the signing of gun half Isaiya Katoa to an extended deal,” the Dolphins said in a statement.

“Katoa will be a Dolphin until at least the end of the 2028 season after inking a three-year extension today.

“The 20-year-old has shown maturity in an impressive start to his NRL career after joining the Dolphins from the Panthers’ junior system.

“The move paid off immediately after Katoa was a shock starter at five-eighth in the Dolphins’ inaugural premiership match last season, going on to log 22 NRL matches in his debut season. He has already played six Tests for Tonga.

“He showed control and skill in the Dolphins’ 38-0 win against the Dragons in round two, and will again lead his side around the park against the Titans on Saturday.”

BRONCOS LOCK UP KEVVIE WITH EXTENSION

The Broncos have extended coach Kevin Walters’ deal for another season.

“The Brisbane Broncos have extended the contract of Head Coach Kevin Walters to the end of 2026,” the club said on a statement.

Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy said the one-year extension was recognition of Walters’ success in developing the football program, and would provide continued stability for the club going forward.

Walters, a five-time Premiership winner with the Broncos and former Captain with 241 premiership games as a player, was announced as Head Coach at the end of 2020 at a difficult time for the club and he has overseen consistent improvement both on and off the field in his time as coach.

“This is the third time that we have extended Kev’s tenure as Head Coach and that’s reflective of the job he is doing in leading positive change across our football program,” Donaghy said.

“This contract extension extends the runway for Kev and his team, giving us continuity and certainty to keep adding to the building blocks that the club has put in place under his stewardship.”

Walters, with 78 games as Broncos Head Coach to his name is fast closing on becoming the club’s second-longest serving mentor.

“It’s no secret how much I love the Broncos, and being able to coach this group for even one game rates as an absolute honour for me,” Walters said.

“To extend my time as coach for a third time is testament to the hard work of all the players and coaches and staff who work as part of our football department.”

In addition to the consistent improvement in on-field performance under Walters, the club has also retained a host of high-calibre talent developed through the Broncos’ Academy system including Payne Haas, Pat Carrigan, Ezra Mam, Jordan Riki, Brendan Piakura, Kotoni Staggs, Selwyn Cobbo, Kobe Hetherington, Tyson Smoothy, Deine Mariner, Xavier Willison and Blake Mozer.
